Insights of a Thoughtful Life

Reflective thoughts, original poems and cultural commentary–posted weekly

“A weekly reflection through verse and imagery.

Original poems reflecting faith, memory, culture, and the quieter questions that shape a thoughtful life.

This poem is offered as a prayerful self-examination, asking God to reveal what enters the heart, what forms it, and what ultimately flows from it.

Examine my heart-

Lord, what do you see?

Does it reflect Christ

Or only deceit?

Have I fooled myself

With my eyes and my ears?

Have I become tainted?–

I ask through my tears.

Like bits of poison

Just entered my heart.

Damaged hearts hurt

As goodness departs.

Don’t think it’s ok

To just watch and listen.

“That’s not who I am!”

Yet, evil’s on mission.

We are what we think,

And think what we see.

Bad language arrives

From listening to these.

For out of the mouth

Overflows the heart.

Who we really are,

Has now shown its part!

Be swift to listen,

And slow to speak.

Silence not quoted–

Think on this please.

Be slow to anger.

Let kindness reign.

Keep evil out—

Your tongue be restrained!

Hearts need check-ups.

We know this is true.

I will check mine

And you should check you!

Does righteousness dwell

In this heart of mine?

Is my first response

Goodness and kind?

Guard your heart

And ask God for help.

Meditate often

And God’s word accept.

Promised a new heart–

Not one of stone!

God given spirit

God created alone.

For out of the heart

We show who we are.

The righteous show right.

Make Jesus your star!
