How Close Is Time to Passing You?

“Time does not rush—but it never waits. This poem invites us to notice how steadily it moves, and what it means for the lives we are living now.”

Time is a soldier
Marching down the street.
Marching to a cadence—
He misses not a beat.

Amid the cries and anguish,
Stop for a little while.
At least go more slowly
For reasons so worthwhile.

The soldier’s ear is deafened,
He marches steadily on.
From birth to childhood quickly.
Adulthood, then….he’s gone!

If you listen to the cadence,
It’s message beats so true.
Time will wait for no man,
Not for even you!

Wealth has no influence,
Nor young love in it’s bloom.
The soldier’s march continues
Until you’re in you’re tomb.

Time is not a commodity.
It’s really not for sale.
Unfortunately there are those
Who spend their time in jail.

Ever how you view it,
It seems that it bears true.
The soldier marches onward
Until he passes you.

Use your time more wisely.
It’s the substance that’s called life.
Don’t squander it cheaply
Spent in foolishness and strife.

Spend your time on people!
Spread a little love.
Talk with God, the Father,
Who watches from above.

Though we cannot buy it,
We’re told time to redeem.
Make the time count daily.
List to the Father’s scheme!

Time’s a faithful soldier.
He’ll never miss a beat.
How close is he to passing
As you stand along the street?
